🤖 2024 AI CORNERS

(Sotheby’s)

The rise of Artificial Intelligence was the most important development in the world of venture capital and pre-IPO startups. Every week, we highlighted an interesting AI-related story that may have been overshadowed by the latest billion-dollar VC raise or new product launch from OpenAI or Anthropic. Here are some highlights:

AI-created artwork: A work created by the robot artist Ai-Da, which is powered by a neural network that generates images, sold for $1.08 million, well above the pre-sale estimate of $120,000 - $180,000.

Voice-cloning: As AI voice cloning technology improves, scammers are conning people with the AI-generated voices of their friends and relatives.

Weather forecasting: GenCast, an AI weatherperson created by Google DeepMind, beat existing forecasting systems in both day-to-day weather forecasting and predicting extreme events up to 15 days in advance.

AI system reduces hospital deaths: Chartwatch, an AI system, cut unexpected deaths by 26% at a Canadian hospital over an 18-month timeframe.

Power usage: A study found that web searches with generative AI use 10 times as much energy as standard search, and data centers are projected to double their electricity usage by 2030 to meet the tech’s rising demand.

Drew Brees’ treehouse (PureWest Real Estate)

Every week, we look at a real estate listing that catches our eye, whether it’s a castle, vineyard, office building, cemetery, or just a really big house. Here were some favorites of 2024, along with a transaction update:

Drew Brees’ treehouse: The NFL legend’s luxury Montana treehouse, featured on “Treehouse Masters,” was up for auction, but does not appear to have sold, remaining on the market for $7.5 million.

Connecticut golf course: The Blue Fox Golf Course, located just west of Hartford, with 27 holes over 250 acres, and its clubhouse, bar and pro shop, was up for auction in September, ultimately selling for $5.775 million.

Vacant Portland building: The graffiti-covered “Gordon’s Fireplace Building,” a vacant 27,000 square-foot commercial property, was scheduled to be auctioned in December, but the auction was delayed. Now set to begin on January 21, it has an opening bid of $225,000.

New York castle: The Amsterdam Castle, a 22,539-square-foot hotel northwest of Albany, is still on the market for $5.6 million.
