🏡 2025 HOT MARKETS

Buffalo, New York, remains the nation’s hottest housing market according to Zillow, topping the list for the second year in a row. It is followed by Indianapolis, Providence, Hartford, and Philadelphia. Notably, none of the top ten markets are in the West or the South, as the Northeast and Midwest continue to dominate these lists. Virginia Beach, VA saw the biggest jump in the rankings, rising 23 spots. The criteria includes forecasted annual appreciation, how quickly homes sold in 2024, and employment levels.

➨ TAKEAWAY: The best markets to invest in are those where demand continues to exceed supply. What the top markets on this list also have in common is relative affordability, which is attracting buyers who may not be able to afford more expensive markets like New York or Boston. The coolest metro area of 2025 is New Orleans, followed by San Francisco, San Jose, Portland, OR, and Austin. These markets have flat or declining home value projections, due to lower demand, oversupply, or struggling job markets.

🚀 IPO CANDIDATES

The 2024 IPO market was slow, and many of the top private startups such as SpaceX and OpenAI have elected to raise massive fundraising rounds rather than go public. However, there are still prominent startups that are strong candidates to go public in 2025, including AI cloud platform CoreWeave, cybersecurity developer Snyk, and payments processor Stripe. The AI chipmaker Cerebras Systems had filed to go public last September, but its IPO was delayed due to a national security review, though the offering is still imminent.

➨ TAKEAWAY: There is hope that the success of 2024 IPOs like Reddit and Astera Labs, the lack of election uncertainty, and friendlier economic conditions will lead to more IPOs in 2025. Strong IPO candidates give investors the potential for a post-IPO bump in value as well as access to liquidity compared to investing into companies that have shown no indication they will go public anytime soon.

📰 NOTABLE NEWS

🚀 Anthropic raise: The AI startup and OpenAI competitor is in talks for a $2 billion fundraising round at a $60 billion valuation, which would mark a significant increase from its last public valuation of $18 billion.

🪙 CFTC chair to resign: The head of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Rostin Behnam, is set to step down on January 20, allowing incoming President Trump to name a successor. It is likely to be someone with a friendlier stance on crypto, which will likely benefit the industry.

💵 Northwestern Mutual & Sixth Street partner: The insurance company Northwestern Mutual is partnering with asset manager Sixth Street in a deal where Sixth Street will manage a $13 billion portfolio and deploy it into a number of alternative asset strategies, including private credit and real estate.

🪙 TikTok crypto videos are misleading: In what would qualify as unsurprising to many, a study found that 68% of crypto videos on TikTok contain misleading information. This number grows to whopping 96% of videos featuring memecoins, which promote specific coins and often promise unrealistic rates of return.

🎨 2025 museum exhibitions: Another list of must-see 2025 museum exhibitions again highlights sculptor Ruth Asawa’s retrospective at SFMOMA and MOMA, along with painter Rashid Johnson’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Guggenheim.

Private equity and health care: A bipartisan congressional investigation found that hospitals owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and Leonard Green & Partners saw reduced patient outcomes and that private equity firms put “their own profits over patients.”

🤖 AI CORNER

Designer handbags are some of the most frequently counterfeited items in the world, with knockoffs sold everywhere from street corners in New York to, most recently, Wal-Mart. The economic impact of counterfeit goods such as handbags, sneakers, and watches, could reach $1.79 trillion by 2030. Companies such as Entrupy and Authentix are now using AI to help authenticate luxury goods by looking at details such as quality of the leather or the pattern of the stitching to tell real from fake. This benefits both resellers, such as auction houses and retailers, and customers, who can be assured that they are buying legitimate products.
